THE LEAD DEPARTMENT

DIED SUDDENLY.
Coroner Ballou was called to Whitewood yesterday morning whither he went with Charles Hardin of Deadwood, and after an eight-mile drive below Whitewood the doctor found that R.W. West had died of angina pectoris. He had been doing some chores about the place yesterday morning, and coming into the kitchen put his hand to his side and complained of pains in his heart. He had sat by the fire but a short time when occupants of the home found him sitting up in the chair dead. There was no need of an inquest, as Mr. West was subject to heart failure spells. His age is not known but he was quite a few years past the forty mark. His body will be sent this evening to Parker, SD for burial.

Another one of our pioneers has been laid to rest, Robert West, who came with his family from near Janesville, Wis, 35 years ago, and homesteaded and highly developed the farm now owned and occupied by W. F. Helfinstine, died at his home near Whitewood, Black Hills, a week ago, and his remains were brought to Parker and laid to rest in the Rosehill cemetary. His son Charles and his wife and daughter, Mrs. Arthur Roberts, accompanied the body to Parker. The funeral was held in the Parker Presbyterian church last Saturday. Death was cause by heart disease. Deceased was a good, kind, generous man liked by all. Had he lived till April 18th, he would have been 71 years old.

Homestead house, Brothersfield Section 15, NW quarter, appears to have been torn down or moved between 1987 and Jul 2000. Mabel, Gordon, Laban and son Ben, visited the house c.1987 when all the farm buildings were still standing. We (L.West family) visited the property again July 2000 and there is no house, no trees, no barn or anything..... only a cornfield. I am confident I had the right location, based on info given me by courthouse in Parker.

Grand Pa and Grand Ma had 5 children when they left the old country. Uncle Will, Aunt charlotte, Alfred and Mahala and Kate, Kate died just before they got to New York on their way here they buried her in New York.
Your Uncle John was the first to be born in this country, then Jane, then Charley, then your mother, Uncle Ben is the youngest, there was I understand one or two babies between your mother and Uncle Ben but they died as infants.
I think your Uncle John and aunt Jane like Charley were born in Janeville Wisconsin. they were all (the older folks) including my mother were first-cousins.

The second thing is that in the morning, many......many times if not hundreds of times I would hear my dad sing (with his unique voice) the first couple of phrases of ...."O what a beautiful morning......O what a beautiful day" (from the musical Oklahoma) and he would stop singing here. He told me that he heard this song while stationed in the south Pacific during WWII. They evidently played this song on the loud speaker to wake the troops up in the morning. Little did he know that years later his son, Laban, would go to OK and settle, and later that he and Mabel would move to OK on Jan 9, 1976. They moved into their house on NW20th on Feb 28, 1976.
>Dad was stationed in three places during WWII..... New Guinea, Okinawa, and the Philipines. In one of these places dad was walking down the street and by chance ran into Howard West his half brother who was also stationed overseas. Dad told me he never had to shoot a gun and was thankful for that although he did hear shooting and bombing in the distance. He did have to dig and use a foxhole from time to time..... I guess during air raids. Dad was assigned to a reconnissance outfit and sewed, repaired and packed parachutes. Dad said that they threatened to every once in a while make him jump with one of the parachutes just to be sure that you were always careful to pack it right. He was never required to jump. lpw

DIED SUDDENLY.
Coroner Ballou was called to Whitewood yesterday morning whither he went with Charles Hardin of Deadwood, and after an eight-mile drive below Whitewood the doctor found that R.W. West had died of angina pectoris. He had been doing some chores about the place yesterday morning, and coming into the kitchen put his hand to his side and complained of pains in his heart. He had sat by the fire but a short time when occupants of the home found him sitting up in the chair dead. There was no need of an inquest, as Mr. West was subject to heart failure spells. His age is not known but he was quite a few years past the forty mark. His body will be sent this evening to Parker, SD for burial.

Another one of our pioneers has been laid to rest, Robert West, who came with his family from near Janesville, Wis, 35 years ago, and homesteaded and highly developed the farm now owned and occupied by W. F. Helfinstine, died at his home near Whitewood, Black Hills, a week ago, and his remains were brought to Parker and laid to rest in the Rosehill cemetary. His son Charles and his wife and daughter, Mrs. Arthur Roberts, accompanied the body to Parker. The funeral was held in the Parker Presbyterian church last Saturday. Death was cause by heart disease. Deceased was a good, kind, generous man liked by all. Had he lived till April 18th, he would have been 71 years old.

Mabel, Gordon, Laban and son Ben, visited the house c.1987 when all the farm buildings were still standing. We (L.West family) visited the property again July 2000 and there is no house, no trees, no barn or anything..... only a cornfield. I am confident I had the right location, based on info given me by courthouse in Parker.

to get the family on your grand Pa and Grand Ma straight is... Grand Ma Harriot and Grand Pa Robert (Bob) West are your proper Grand parents on your mothers side. Emily West was your Step Grand Ma. her first husband Uncle Dick West and Grand Ma Harriot were brother and sister ...they were all born close to my home in Kent England.
Grand Pa and Grand Ma had 5 children when they left the old country. Uncle Will, Aunt charlotte, Alfred and Mahala and Kate, Kate died just before they got to New York on their way here they buried her in New York.
Your Uncle John was the first to be born in this country, then Jane, then Charley, then your mother, Uncle Ben is the youngest, there was I understand one or two babies between your mother and Uncle Ben but they died as infants.

The second thing is that in the morning, many......many times if not hundreds of times I would hear my dad sing (with his unique voice) the first couple of phrases of ...."O what a beautiful morning......O what a beautiful day" (from the musical Oklahoma) and he would stop singing here. He told me that he heard this song while stationed in the south Pacific during WWII. They evidently played this song on the loud speaker to wake the troops up in the morning. Little did he know that years later his son, Laban, would go to OK and settle, and later that he and Mabel would move to OK on Jan 9, 1976. They moved into their house on NW20th on Feb 28, 1976.
>Dad was stationed in three places during WWII..... New Guinea, Okinawa, and the Philipines. In one of these places dad was walking down the street and by chance ran into Howard West his half brother who was also stationed overseas. Dad told me he never had to shoot a gun and was thankful for that although he did hear shooting and bombing in the distance. He did have to dig and use a foxhole from time to time..... I guess during air raids. Dad was assigned to a reconnissance outfit and sewed, repaired and packed parachutes. Dad said that they threatened to every once in a while make him jump with one of the parachutes just to be sure that you were always careful to pack it right. He was never required to jump. lpw
