Daniel Faulkner (Father of David Faulkner?)
CIRCUMSTANTIAL EVIDENCE
DANIEL and ELIZABETH FALKNER? (of Wythe/Scott Co. VA)
PARENTS OF DAVID FALKNER b.1811 (of Wythe/Scott Co VA,
Owen Co IN, and Brown Co TX)
Laban West/July 1999
My theory is based heavily on the historical article written by David Folkner and published in the Owen County Journal, IN, Feb 12, 1874. David had lived in Owen Co. for about 40 years having come from Scott Co. VA. The following is the beginning of that article:
DAVID FOLKNER
was born January 7, 1811 in Wythe county, Virginia, where I resided with my parents until 10 years of age, when I removed to Sullivan county, East Tennessee. After remaining there two years my parents bought land in Scott county, Virginia and moved upon it. I lived with them until I was 23 years old, when I took a notion to marry, and on the 12th of September, 1833 was married to Ceila Ann Grizzle. As the parents of both were opposed to the match we eloped ...
FINDINGS:
1. Daniel listed on the 1800 Wythe Co tax list-P7. Daniel does not appear on the 1793 Wythe Co tax list, but there is a Daniel Falkner acquiring land in the 1790’s in Bath Co.
2. Daniel, verified in Wythe Co, 1806. Court record names Daniel as having killed a wolf; received $2.50.
3. Daniel, only Falkner HH in 1810 Wythe Co Census (with spouse & 7 children) There is a Thomas Falkner in Wythe Co c1806 (land deed). Thomas Fortner never appears in Sullivan Co TN but does appear next to Daniel and Joseph Fordner in 1820 Scott Co VA. Could Thomas, Joseph, and Daniel have been brothers?
4. David b.1811 in Wythe Co VA
5. Daniel, and Jacob Falkner (Folkener, Folkner) and Jacob Olinger all listed in Captain Christopher Brown's Company of militia, called into service Jan 12, 1815 in Wythe Co.
6. Daniel, in 1820 Wythe Co VA Census (over 45 yrs old) He is listed with spouse plus 10 in the household. Next to Daniel are Joseph Fordner and Thomas Fortner. William Fulkner is 9 HH away. William probably a son and married to Jane Olinger, 1819.
7. Daniel alledgedly sells tract of land (694 acres) in Wythe Co 1820 (Fr: Dave Boatman) (Need to re-locate this record again)
8. When David was 10 yrs old (c.1821) - the family moves to Sullivan Co in TN
9. Daniel, with spouse, in 1830 Sullivan Co Census (60-70 yrs old). Daniel's appearance in Sullivan Co was to have occurred according to David Falkners writings in the Owen County Journal article.
Three houses away is a James Falkner and spouse (both 20-30 yrs old - probably a son)
10. Davids family alledgedly moves to Scott Co VA from Sullivan Co in the 1820's. *
11. In 1830, Daniel of/Sullivan Co TN buys land in Scott Co VA (Deed Bk 4, pg 97)
12. In 1831, Daniel sells land to William Falkner*** in Scott Co VA
13. We know, according to David's own writing, that he and wife Celia left Scott Co for IN/IL.
14. 1840, Daniel disappears (not on Scott Co or surrounding Co's census) I surmise that Daniel died between 1830 and 1840.
15. 1840, Scott Co Census, p.300, Elizabeth Falkner**, HH 50-60 yrs old, with two older children.
16. 1840 Scott Co Census, William Falkner & spouse (both 40-50 yrs old)***, nextdoor to Elizabeth.**
17. 1840 Scott Co Census, a Jacob Olinger nextdoor to William Falkner. William is probably the same William that married Jane Olinger.
18. 1840 Scott Co Census, p.312, an Issac Falkner & spouse (both 40-50 yrs old, possibly a son of Daniel)
19. 1850 Scott Co Census, William Folkner HH (age 53), wife Jane (age 57), 6 children, plus Elizabeth Folkner (age 73); also and Elijah (age 23), Nancy (age 21), and Margaret (age 3/12).
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
* Only disputing factor: David implies in OCJ article that his family remained in Sullivan Co only 2 yrs?
** Could Elizabeth be Daniels wife and could William be David and Mary's brother?
*** Most likely a son, maybe a brother to Daniel?
+ Other information on a Daniel Faulkner: A Daniel Faulkner married a Mary Hogan,5 June 1793, in Albm Co, VA. F/Albm Co marriage bond/”Some VA Marriages” F225,.m31
